Grand Hall

Tag für Tag wurden auf der Kokerei Zollverein 10.000 Tonnen Steinkohle verkokt. Das entspricht der Ladung von drei Binnenfrachtschiffen, aus der 8.000 Tonnen Koks und drei Millionen Kubikmeter Gas entstanden. In der Grand Hall befand sich die Sauger- und Kompressorenhalle, in der das Kokereigas abgesaugt und anderen Verwendungen zugeführt wurde, ob wiederum zum Anheizen der Koksöfen oder für das Gasnetz der Ruhrgas AG. Die imposant elegante Erscheinung der Halle brachten nach Jahrzehnten des Stillstands Investoren erneut zum Vorschein. In der gründlich ertüchtigten „Grand Hall“ werden seit 2017 vor allem Veranstaltungen von Unternehmen durchgeführt mit perfekter Technik, variabler Möblierung und Bühnenaufbau in einer fast 100 Meter langen „Eventlocation“ – für einen Ausklang der Veranstaltung steht auch ein Club zur Verfügung. Einer der beiden Investoren war Claus Dürscheidt. Als Macher des Casino Zollverein und zuvor seit 1980 der „Zeche Bochum“ hatte er sein Unternehmerleben ganz mit der Entwicklung von dem verbunden, was wir heute wie selbstverständlich Industriekultur nennen und nutzen. Leider erlebte der umtriebige Dürscheidt die Eröffnung der Grand Hall nicht mehr, er verstarb 2014 mit 74 Jahren.

Day after day, 10,000 tons of hard coal were burned at Zollverein’s coking plant. This corresponds to the load of three inland cargo ships, which produce 8,000 tons of coke and three million cubic meters of gas. The suction and compressor hall was located in the Grand Hall, where the coke oven gas was extracted and used for other purposes, whether for firing up the coke ovens or for the Ruhrgas gas network. The imposingly elegant appearance of the hall was brought back to life by investors after decades of disuse. Since 2017, the completely renovated “Grand Hall” has been primarily used for corporate events with perfect technical equipment variable furnishings, and a stage set-up in an almost 100-meter-long “event location”. There is also a club available to round off the event. One of the two investors was Claus Dürscheidt. As the creator of the Casino Zollverein and, before that, the “Zeche Bochum” since 1980, he had dedicated his entre-preneurial life to the development of what we today call and use industrial culture as a matter of course. Unfortunately, the enterprising Dürscheidt did not live to see the opening of the Grand Hall; he passed away in 2014 at the age of 74.
