Underground Mining World at Zollverein

Coming in spring 2024

Explore the working world underground

There will be a new highlight at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site from the spring of 2024: In the permanent exhibition “Underground Mining World”, visitors can explore the working world underground and still remain above ground.

The journey begins in 1847 with the manual sinking of the first shaft of Zollverein and ends with the closure of the final German hard coal pit in 2018. Visitors will follow the miners and learn about their daily work, their life, language, traditions and work techniques. Apart from many original exhibits and multisensory hands-on stations, there is a virtual trip through a real mine at a depth of 1,000 metres.

More information coming soon.
